How does a 15 man roster work? Can I dress whatever 12 players I want to?

I'm playing as the Trail Blazers on NBA 2K9 and traded away some of their veteran players to go even younger. I was just wondering if NBA rules allow you to use whatever 12 players you want day to day. My team is

I like to matchup with other teams whether they are big/small/physical/fast. I want to be able to use whoever I want depending on the game and team I'm playing. Depending on injuries too of course. My top 9 are regulars. I'm just looking to matchup based on fouls during a game. Say I'm playing Duncan, Shaq or any other big man that dominates the post, I want Gasol and Williams deep on my bench for fouls and big bodies. Say I'm playing Kobe or Lebron I want Brewer and Batum on my bench for their defense. I like to keep Cook in the top 12 for his shooting and Sergio is a great ballhandler, so its nice to keep him in there as well. I like having versatility and the ability to win any type of game.
